Italian giants, Juventus were given a ten-point deduction in the Serie A this week which means they will almost certainly miss out on the Champions League next season.

Juventus not being in Europe’s biggest competition is set to benefit other clubs, including Arsenal.

The Italian Side now sit in 7th place in Seria A, after their point deduction, which leaves them five points behind AC Milan in 4th with two games remaining.

Earlier this season, the Old Lady had been handed a penalty of 15 points, but this was eventually lifted in April following an appeal. However this time, Juventus weren’t so lucky.

How does Champions League ranking work and why do Arsenal benefit?

Following Champions League qualification, teams are placed into one of four pots, which are decided mainly by every club’s UEFA coefficient ranking.

However Pot 1 is a little bit different as it consists of various league champions for that season and also the Europa League and Europa Conference League winners.

Each Champions League group is made up of one club from each pot, meaning it would be advantageous to your club to be as high up the pot rankings as possible.

Mikel Arteta’s side have already secured Champions League football for next term, but the point penalty that Juventus have faced is set to benefit the Gunners.

Before Juventus’ point deduction, Arsenal found themselves in Pot 3, meaning they would draw a team from Pot 1 and Pot 2, which contain – on paper – the best teams in Europe.

Fifth-placed AC Milan will most likely replace Juventus as the fourth Italian side in the Champions League next season. Unlike Juventus, Milan have a worse coefficient score than Arsenal, which means the Gunners would shift up a pot.

Now Arsenal have snuck into pot 2, they will miss out on facing the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in the group stage which can only be seen as a positive.
