Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has lavished praise on Arsenal defence, declaring them as the best in the world.

The Gunners have made significant improvements in their backline this season, conceding fewer goals than any other team in the Premier League and keeping more clean sheets.

“Arsenal right now defensively are as good as anyone in Europe and probably the world,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “They have definitely improved in 2024 than probably the first half of the season. The biggest reason for me is the role of Kai Havertz.”

Carragher highlighted Havertz’s impact on the team’s defensive solidity, saying, “Kai Havertz has been mocked a little bit at the start of the season, and when he came in, you weren’t quite sure where he fits in. To be honest, I have never been sure what his position is.

“I think finally, he is a centre-forward. I am not going to say he is an unbelievable goal-scorer because he’s not, but he’s a centre-forward, and he is helping Arsenal do what they are doing right now, which is being so strong defensively, and that is what gives them a great chance of winning the Premier League.”

Arsenal’s defence has been a key factor in their title challenge, with William Saliba and Gabriel forming a formidable partnership at the heart of the backline. Declan Rice, who joined the club from West Ham in the summer, has also played a crucial role in protecting the defence.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has also emphasised the importance of a strong defence in winning championships. “I think if you want to win championships, your defence has to be extremely consistent and very difficult to beat,” he said. “We have that, and it’s great to have the players, how they live their defensive phase, and the contribution that they put in every ball to make it really difficult for the opponent.”

With their defence looking solid, Arsenal will be hoping to maintain their title challenge and secure a place in the Champions League next season.
