Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Arsenal, branding them as the best defensive team in Europe and asserting that this strength provides them with a huge advantage in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal were brilliant once again with a resounding 6-0 victory over Sheffield United, adding to their recent impressive away triumphs over West Ham (6-0) and Burnley (5-0).

The Gunners, now within striking distance of title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, found themselves five goals up at halftime during the Sheffield United clash. Goals from Martin Odegaard, Jayden Bogle’s own goal, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, and Declan Rice, followed by Ben White’s goal in the second half, solidified their dominance.

While currently sitting third in the league table, Arsenal boasts an unparalleled defensive record, conceding the fewest goals and securing the most clean sheets in the division. Mikel Arteta’s team leads in expected goals against, shots on target faced, and opposition touches in the opposition box.

Carragher, speaking on Monday Night Football, emphasised that Arsenal’s defensive improvements have given them a crucial edge in the title race. Despite initial doubts about their title chances due to a lack of goals, Carragher highlighted their evolution in both attacking and defensive aspects.

“When I watch Arsenal, I think they are not just the best team defensively in the league, but in Europe too. Arsenal right now are better than anybody, not just in the Premier League but possibly in Europe, at defending that way.”

Carragher attributes Arsenal’s defensive excellence to their ability to pin opponents in their own half, preventing them from accessing the Arsenal goal. He likened their defensive strategy to a full-court press.

“You can’t play through this Arsenal team when they have got you in their half,” he added, referencing the first period of the 4-1 win over Newcastle, during which Arsenal won possession in the final third more times in one half (11) than any other side all season.

“It’s almost like a full-court press, ‘we’re playing a game, 11-vs-11, in this half of the pitch’.

“Arsenal right now are better than anybody, not just in the Premier League but possibly in Europe, at defending that way.”
