Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that winger Bukayo Saka will be fit to start in their upcoming match against Luton. The Gunners manager also provided updates on Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Martinelli.

Saka, who was substituted late in Sunday’s goalless draw against Manchester City, had shown signs of fatigue prompting Arteta’s cautious approach.

Arteta revealed after the game at the Etihad that Saka was unable to play the full 90 minutes. Additionally, Saka had withdrawn from the England squad last month due to a minor muscle injury. However, Arteta has assured fans that Saka is ready to face Luton at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

The Gunners, currently second in the table, are eager to regain the top spot with a win against Luton. Arteta emphasised the team’s focus on the upcoming fixture and their determination to secure victory.

Speaking ahead of the match, Arteta stated, “He is fine. Obviously we haven’t trained, just recovered. We will have a short, light session today to prepare the game and we will see whether he is in the best position to start or not.”

Arsenal’s confidence is bolstered by the readiness of other key players, including Gabriel Martinelli, who Arteta confirmed is ready to play a full 90 minutes. Furthermore, Arteta provided updates on Jurrien Timber’s recovery, expressing optimism about the possibility of his return to the squad later in the season.

Mikel Arteta on Jurrien Timber: “He’s doing very well. He’s back training. He’s not far off. The thing is that last step. I would say he’s got a good chance [of playing before the end of the season].”

Reflecting on Arsenal’s defensive strategy in their recent draw against Manchester City, Arteta defended the team’s approach, stressing the need to adapt tactics for different opponents.

“Pep Guardiola praised the way Arsenal set up at the Etihad but made regular references to their low block and how they doggedly frustrated City,” Arteta noted. “You have to leave your ego aside, your ideology aside and do what you have to do to win the game.”

Arteta commended his team’s mental strength and tactical acumen in executing the defensive plan against Manchester City, highlighting their resilience in achieving the goal of preventing City from scoring at home in the Premier League, a feat not accomplished since October 2021.
