Arsenal legend Ian Wright has openly admitted his regret over Mikel Arteta’s failure to secure the signing of Cole Palmer before the 21-year-old made a high-profile move to Chelsea.

Palmer, who left his boyhood club Manchester City in September for a staggering £42.5 million transfer deal, has quickly become a key player for Chelsea, impressing with 12 goals and nine assists in just 29 appearances under a lucrative seven-year contract.

Expressing his admiration for Palmer in a recent podcast episode of the “Wrighty’s House” podcast, Wright couldn’t hide his jealousy toward Arsenal’s London rivals for having the talented midfielder in their ranks. “I don’t want to say who I’d have had him in for, but I’d have loved to have had Cole Palmer,” confessed the former Gunners striker.

While comparisons to players like Riyad Mahrez, Palmer’s ex-City teammate, are being made, Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has gone a step further, suggesting that the 21-year-old could potentially be the next Kevin De Bruyne.

Nevin, undeterred by potential criticism, declared on Lucky Block this week, “I don’t make hyperbolic statements and I don’t exaggerate, so it was a big statement. If you watch Palmer, you can see it now. He picks the right ball and he’s the one who creates everything. He’s the one who makes Chelsea special.”

Palmer scored the first goal in the 2023 FA Community Shield against Arsenal in August 2023, after coming on for Erling Haaland as a second-half substitute. However, Arsenal scored in stoppage time and eventually won the match in a penalty shoot-out

Chelsea signed Palmer as a replacement for Kai Havertz who joined Arsenal in the summer and he has turned out to be Blues best player so far in an underwhelming season.

He also scored against Arsenal in a Chelsea colour earlier in the season from the penalty spot with William Saliba penalised for handball following the intervention of the video assistant referee.
