Arsenal legend Ian Wright didn’t hold back in his assessment of David Raya and Declan Rice, branding their decisions as “rash” and suggesting they handed Tottenham a lifeline in the recent north London derby.

Despite securing a 3-2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal could have enjoyed a more comfortable outing, given their three-goal lead at halftime. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s own goal and Bukayo Saka’s strike gave the Gunners an early advantage, with Kai Havertz adding to the tally just before halftime.

However, a lapse in concentration saw Cristian Romero capitalised on a mistake from Arsenal goalkeeper Raya, followed by a penalty conceded by Rice, which allowed Tottenham to claw their way back into the game.

“I was really pleased with the way they were so in control of what they needed to do, especially once Tottenham got back into the game.

“They’ve done so well to get to this point. You can’t do rash things which is what the we saw the goalkeeper do, unfortunately.

“Even the penalty that we had given away was quite a rash decision to make from Declan, simply because of where the ball is. There’s going to be a player in and around it and you’ve got to be a lot more careful about that.”

While acknowledging the team’s overall achievement, Wright cautioned against repeating such “rash” decisions in crucial moments, urging Arsenal to remain focused as they continue their title challenge.

The Gunners’ victory keeps them in contention for the Premier League title, but Wright’s observations serve as a reminder of the need for consistency and discipline in their pursuit of success.
