Graeme Souness has suggested that Arsenal’s skipper Martin Odegaard deserves consideration for Footballer of the Year honours, although he believes Manchester City’s Phil Foden is likely to clinch the title.

Odegaard has continued to shine brightly throughout the season, playing an important role in Arsenal’s pursuit of both domestic and European accolades. The Norwegian maestro showcased his talent yet again in a recent Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, contributing to Arsenal’s spirited comeback.

However, it was Foden who stole the spotlight with a dazzling performance for Manchester City against Real Madrid, capped off by a stunning goal. Souness, speaking to Mail Sport, acknowledged Odegaard’s contributions but ultimately favoured Foden for his consistently outstanding displays.

“He has been outstanding,” remarked Souness of Foden. “He appears to have that attitude where he wants to learn something new every day in training, and we are seeing a real superstar in the making.”

Despite Odegaard’s commendable efforts, Souness believes Foden’s exceptional skill and work ethic make him a standout candidate for the award. Reflecting on Foden’s recent goal against Real Madrid, Souness praised the Englishman’s composure and technical prowess, hailing him as a “terrific striker of the ball.”

“His goal against Real Madrid in midweek summed him up. Calmness under pressure, he shifted the ball out of his feet and hit it so smoothly. He is a terrific striker of the ball.”

Arsenal and Manchester City are both preparing for the second legs of their Champions League ties, Souness emphasised the competitive nature of the tournament, with every team vying for success. He highlighted the mentality of top players, noting that both clubs have the potential to progress further in the competition.

“The standard of the quarter finals were everything you would hope for, a fabulous watch, a great advert for Champions League football and Manchester City and Arsenal have nothing to fear going into the second legs.

“The only problem is every one of those teams will be thinking the same. That’s the mentality of the best players.”
