Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has showered praise on Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, calling him the “best in his position” following his exceptional performance in Arsenal’s recent 5-0 win against Chelsea.

Odegaard played a pivotal role in the game, contributing assists for two of Arsenal’s goals, bringing his total goal contributions for the season to 20 across all competitions, a statistic surpassed only by Bukayo Saka. Neville lauded Odegaard’s recent displays as “mesmerising,” highlighting his influence on Arsenal’s success.

Arsenal currently leads the Premier League table, sitting three points ahead of Liverpool and four ahead of Manchester City. However, with Manchester City having two games in hand, they could overtake Arsenal if they win both matches.

As Arsenal enters a crucial phase of the season, with four games remaining, Odegaard’s performance will be crucial to their title aspirations. Reflecting on Arsenal’s victory over Chelsea on his podcast, Neville remarked on their dominance and singled out Odegaard for his exceptional play.

“They were outstanding in that first 25 minutes against Aston Villa when we were there a couple of weeks ago, some of the football. And Odegaard is mesmerising at the moment, I think he’s become the best in that position in terms of the way in which he plays.”

Looking ahead to Arsenal’s upcoming clash against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby, Neville cautioned Arsenal not to underestimate their opponents, drawing parallels with Liverpool’s recent defeat to Everton in the Merseyside derby. He emphasised the importance of being mentally prepared for the intensity of the match and learning from Liverpool’s setback.

“Arsenal cannot be shocked on Sunday, it’s potentially going to be a bloodbath in the first 15, 20 minutes, Tottenham fans don’t want Arsenal to win the league. It’s a big game on Sunday and (Liverpool’s defeat to Everton) is a big lesson for Arsenal tonight.

“If Arsenal were watching, which I suspect they were, they should look at that game, it’s not quite the same – Tottenham are a different football team to Everton – but the elements of making sure they’re ready, they don’t get caught out, making sure that away from home you respect the opposition and the crowd and what you could be up against if they get on top of you, the principles of playing away, Arsenal can’t forget that just because they’re a better football team and they’re in a better moment.”

Neville urged Arsenal to maintain focus and respect their opponents, especially in away fixtures, despite their current form and league position. He stressed the significance of approaching the match with a tactical mindset and readiness for the challenges posed by their rivals.
