Aston Villa handed Arsenal their first defeat in the Premier League in 2024, with a surprised 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, putting a dent on their title aspirations.

Mikel Arteta’s side started the game with promise, appearing ready to capitalise on Liverpool’s earlier slip-up and reclaim the top spot in the league table. However, after 90 minutes of play, the title race has slipped out of Arsenal’s control, with their hopes now resting on potential slip-ups from Manchester City.

Arsenal had chances to score in the first half, but Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard all missed good opportunities to give the Gunners the lead after a dominant first half. They were made to pay for their missed chances with two second half goals from the visitors. Substitute Leon Bailey scored in the 84th minute to give Unai Emery’s side the lead before Ollie Watkins wrapped up the win in the 87th minute.

Following the match, Gary Neville expressed particular dissatisfaction with the performance, especially highlighting Gabriel Jesus’ shortcomings on the field.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville singled out Gabriel Jesus for criticism. The pundit lamented the Brazilian’s sloppy performance, citing missed opportunities and errant passes throughout the first half. He expressed frustration at Jesus’ lack of precision in crucial moments, suggesting it was hindering Arsenal’s chances.

“He’s been so scruffy in the final part of his game Gabriel Jesus, during the first half,” Neville said. “He’s still shaking his head and wondering how he didn’t make that pass. He hustles and harasses but his imperfection is the problem at the moment.”

Despite the defeat, Arsenal still have important matches ahead, including a showdown with Bayern Munich. However, Jesus’ inconsistent showing against Villa casts doubt on his suitability as Arsenal’s starting striker for future matches.

In the aftermath of the loss, Mikel Arteta faces the challenge of rallying his team and turning their frustration into motivation for upcoming fixtures. While the setback is significant, Arsenal still has time to regroup and push forward in the title race.
