Gabriel Jesus spoke to the media ahead of Arsenal’s game against PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Finally after a seven year absence, the Gunners return to Europe’s elite competition, having not played in the Champions League since the 2016/17 season.

Gabriel Jesus is one of a few players who have previous Champions League experience in the Arsenal squad, with many set to make their debuts in the competition tomorrow night. Mohamed Elneny is the only player to feature in the Champions League for the Gunners on a previous occasion.

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus says the Gunners must believe they can win the Champions League, and they’re not just here to participate. Only Olympiacos have played in more Champions League seasons without winning it at least once than Arsenal. This season, they go level with the Greek side with their 20th campaign.

Gabriel Jesus speaking ahead of the game against PSV: “Yesterday some of them were joking in the gym and putting on the [Champions League] music.”

“I think everyone is happy, the club, the players, the fans because it’s a long time since we played in this competition. Now Arsenal are back. A club like Arsenal cannot stay without playing this competition.

“I think everyone here is experienced in how to control emotions. Some of them it’s their first time playing the Champions League. It’s a different competition but I still think everyone will do good.”

When asked if the squad should believe they can win the competition for the first time in the club’s history, Jesus said: “Of course, all the competitions, all the trophies, we go to win the competition.

“If you think the opposite we are wrong because we’re playing for Arsenal. We have to believe. We have to trust the manager, players and the club and we have to go for it.”
