A former Arsenal star has secured a fairytale promotion for his local club, just six years after leaving the Gunners having struggled to impress in North London.

Lucas Pérez may not be remembered by all Arsenal fans, owing to the fact that he made just 21 appearances for the club, but Sunday was a very special day for the Spanish striker.

Pérez rejoined Deportivo La Coruña, with whom he had spent two seasons with before joining Arsenal, in January 2023, and remarkably paid for the transfer out of his own wages.

At this time, the club were languishing in the Spanish third tier, just five years after having been in the top flight, and Pérez was determined to change the club’s fortunes.

The 2023/24 season was Pérez’s first full season back with his local side, and was one to remember as the Spaniard contributed 29 goal involvements in 30 league games, which saw tremendous success for Deportivo La Coruña on the pitch.


On Sunday, Pérez scored the only goal in Deportivo La Coruña’s 1-0 win at home to Barcelona Atlètic – a result which sealed promotion back to the second tier for the club with two games still be play in the coming weeks.

At 35 years old, the promotion is a special moment for the former Arsenal star, who has previously spoken in the highest terms about his time with the Gunners.

On his time at Arsenal, Pèrez said: “It’s the best club I have been at in my career in terms of history, its fan base, the people I played with, everything. It was incredible.”
