Former Arsenal star Alex Iwobi has opened up on life in the Premier League since he left north London in 2019.

Iwobi graduated from the Hale End academy and made his first team debut in October 2015 against Sheffield United in the League cup. He became a regular in Arsene Wenger’s squad, keeping established players out of the team, including starring in the UEFA Champions League game against FC Barcelona.

Despite Iwobi’s popularity and love for the club, he left the club on transfer deadline day to Everton for £35million in a deal that surprised many. The offer at the time was too good for Arsenal to turn down for an academy player, meaning the Gunners were on the profit, reaping dividends for the investment in his football education and development.

He has since moved back from Merseyside to London, after joining Fulham this summer for £22million and has become an important player for Marco Silva.

Having joined the club at the age of 15, the 27-year-old made north London his home, a club that helped him become a professional footballer. 41 months since leaving the club that he loves so much, Iwobi is still missing home in north London, but had to move on in his career which is often the case with elite athletes.

When asked if he still misses north London, Iwobi said, “I guess so. That’s football, you can’t continue missing a lot of things, life goes on and life goes fast. Of course Arsenal was my home, but I’m happy I am at Fulham and I am enjoying myself at the moment.”

While Iwobi is having a brilliant season at Fulham after reuniting with Marco Silva, scoring four goals and 1 assists in 19 matches across all competition from midfield, Arsenal are struggling at the moment, with Mikel Arteta still trying to find the right balance in his midfield since the departure of Granit Xhaka this summer.

The Gunners have won just one of their last six matches, including three consecutive defeats to West Ham, Fulham and Liverpool, and lost top spot to the Reds, but Iwobi believes the players are giving their all while expecting them to achieve something ‘special’ this season.

“The last game I played against them, we got a result, they have good players, it’s a young team and they are all giving their best, I’l say to the fans to be patient, hopefully they do something special this season.”

Arsenal were top of the Premier League table on Christmas day, but six days after Christmas, found themselves five points behind Liverpool. Many have doubts about their title credentials but Iwobi believes they have the players to win the title this season.

“With the players they have, why not?”

Mikel Arteta and his players are currently on a short winter break in Dubai, and will return to domestic action with the visit of Crystal Palace, hoping to put the poor run behind them.
