Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has suggested that he regrets not signing Declan Rice, who joined Arsenal last summer in a £100 million move from West Ham, instead of Arsenal.

Rice has emerged as one of Mikel Arteta’s key players this season, featuring in all 36 of Arsenal’s Premier League games and earning a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Year award.

Reflecting on the transfer tussle for Rice, Ten Hag expressed admiration for the midfielder’s abilities and hinted at his desire for Manchester United to have been involved in the pursuit.

Despite spending over £150 million on new signings last summer, including Andre Onana, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Hojlund, Manchester United were not prominent contenders for Rice’s signature, despite a long-standing interest in the player.

Commenting on Rice’s suitability for Manchester United, Ten Hag remarked, “He’s a very good player. He would absolutely have fitted here.”

With Arsenal and Manchester United set to face off at Old Trafford this weekend, Ten Hag emphasised his team’s commitment to securing a positive result, despite their lower standing in the league compared to Arsenal.

“Arsenal are one of the best teams or probably the best team, is it City or Arsenal? Very ball secure, very good structures. We know we have to play at our maximum levels to get a result but we are capable of it.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged his players to deliver a high-level performance as they seek to improve their historically poor record at Old Trafford. Arteta acknowledged the significance of the upcoming fixture and stressed the need for Arsenal to perform at their best to secure victory.

“Every game has a different context,’ Arteta said. “We know our history [at Old Trafford] how we have done over there, so we are going to have to be at our best to win the game.

“We know what we need to do, but first we have to perform at a high level to deserve to win the match. That is where the focus is.”
