Arsenal have tied many first-team players down to new long-term contracts recently. This includes Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, Reiss Nelson, William Saliba, Gabriel and Aaron Ramsdale with Ben White expected to follow shortly.

Edu is also trying to sign Italian midfielder, Jorginho down to a new short-term contract, however according to Joao Santos, Jorginho’s agent, talks are currently at a ‘standstill’ between both parties.

Jorginho’s contract with Arsenal is set to expire at the end of this season, although the club do have an option of a further year.

Jorginho

Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of Jorginho as the Arsenal manager tried to sign the midfielder in the past, before he was successful in January last season. The situation must be a priority for Arsenal to sort, however, Jorginho’s agent has now claimed that talks simply aren’t progressing for now.

Santos on Jorginho’s contract situation: “Everything is at a standstill. We’ll think about it after February. However, the priority remains Arsenal.”

With Declan Rice and Thomas Partey the two main options in midfield this season, Jorginho was expected to play a lesser role than last season. However following Partey’s injury troubles, the Italian has already made nine appearances in the Premier League so far during the 2023/24 campaign. Jorginho has proved vital for Mikel Arteta.

The midfielder has provided consistency and leadership. He also started the game at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season which saw Arsenal beat Manchester City for the first time in the Premier League in over 8 years.

Despite talks having stalled, Jorginho is still expected to sign a new short-term contract at Arsenal before the season ends.

Although the club are looking to sign a new midfielder in January, with the likes of Ruben Neves and Douglas Luiz being linked, Mikel Arteta remains a huge fan of Jorginho’s and values his leadership and experience very highly in what is a young Arsenal squad.
