Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has disclosed the words of encouragement he received from Gunners manager Mikel Arteta regarding his potential earlier this year.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN, the Arsenal summer signing says that Arteta has told him about his untapped potential, expressing confidence in his ability to achieve greater heights in football.

Since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium in a blockbuster £100 million-plus transfer from West Ham, the 25-year-old has been nothing short of a revelation for the Gunners. His stellar performances on the pitch have quickly justified his hefty price tag, making him a vital cog in Arsenal’s pursuit of success.

Rice’s influence has been instrumental in Arsenal’s impressive form, which has kept them in contention for the Premier League title and propelled them into the last 16 of the Champions League, despite facing a deficit against Porto.

Acknowledging Rice’s outstanding contributions, he was honoured with the prestigious Premier League Player of the Year award at the 2024 London Football Awards.

Despite his remarkable achievements thus far, Rice revealed that Arteta continually pushes him to strive for even greater accomplishments, emphasising the importance of winning trophies.

“I have this conversation with the manager all the time,” Rice disclosed. “A couple of weeks ago he said, ‘you don’t realise the potential of how far you can go.’ Maybe sometimes I don’t, maybe sometimes I play it down and I don’t feel as confident as I seem. The next thing is winning trophies.”

Arsenal are in the hunt for the Premier League title, and Rice remains determined to contribute to the team’s success. Reflecting on Arsenal’s near miss in the previous season, Rice highlighted the team’s resilience and determination to learn from past mistakes.

“I think Arsenal were the best team in the league last season, but they slipped up at the end,” Declan Rice stated. “What they say now is they can’t believe they lost the league from being eight points ahead.”
