Arsenal midfield maestro, Declan Rice, has fired back at critics, including former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, questioning his scoring ability and the hefty price tag Arsenal paid for his services.

The England international, who joined Arsenal in a record-breaking £105 million deal, has silenced doubters with stellar performances, tallying six goals and seven assists in 35 Premier League appearances.

Rice’s impressive form has been instrumental in Arsenal’s rise to the top of the table as they strive to clinch their first league title since 2004. With only three league games remaining, the 25-year-old is determined to play an important role in securing victory for the Gunners.

In an interview with The Athletic, Rice dismissed criticism of his scoring record, citing careers of pundits like Keane, Graeme Souness, and Jamie Redknapp, who’s playing styles differed from prolific scoring. Rice pinpointed his contributions as a box-to-box midfielder and highlighted his recent goal-scoring exploits, which have notably silenced his detractors.

“Roy Keane, (Graeme) Souness, (Jamie) Redknapp, people that talk about my goalscoring ability, if you looked at their goals, they didn’t score hundreds in their career. But they’re remembered for what they did as midfield players: Roy Keane breaking up play, being a hard-tackling midfielder, won loads of titles for United.

“The same with Souness. So I don’t know why when it comes to me it’s all about goals, because it’s never been my game. But since I’ve been scoring, no one has said anything!”

Despite ending his tenure at West Ham United with 15 goals in 245 games, Declan Rice has emerged as a dynamic force in Arsenal’s midfield, showcasing his versatility and playmaking abilities. While scoring goals may not be his primary duty, Rice’s stellar performances have earned him recognition as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders this season.

With a manager like Mikel Arteta at Arsenal who pays attention to details, Rice’s development shows no signs of slowing down, fueling hopes of ending his club’s title wait and competing for major silverware in the future.
