Journalist Charles Watts has issued an update regarding the availability of Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli ahead of their upcoming match against Manchester City.

There remains uncertainty surrounding Gabriel Martinelli’s fitness for Arsenal. The Brazilian winger was recently spotted on crutches at the Emirates Stadium following an injury sustained in a Premier League clash against Brentford. Consequently, he was absent from Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Porto.

Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta downplayed the severity of the injury, attributing it to a foot gash. However, Martinelli’s omission from the Brazil squad during the international break fueled speculation among Arsenal supporters that he could face an extended period on the sidelines.

The potential absence of Martinelli would be a significant setback for Arsenal, as he is a regular starter and possesses the ability to influence matches with his game-changing moments, exemplified by his winning goal against Manchester City earlier in the season.

Charles Watts, providing insights on the situation, remarked on his Inside Arsenal YouTube channel, stating, “We don’t know yet about Gabriel Martinelli. I have to admit, I’ve heard nothing so far on Martinelli and his fitness, and whether he’s going to make it for this game or not. Still some time to find out about that, as we progress during the week, might well hear some whisperings.”

He added that Arsenal remains tight-lipped about Martinelli’s condition, despite initial assurances that the injury was not serious.

“For now, Arsenal are keeping very closed, sort of tight ranks, over what’s going on with Martinelli…The word we got initially after the injury, even when he was on crutches, was that ‘we don’t think it’s too bad, it’s just precautionary’…but you have to think he’s a doubt.”

If Martinelli is unavailable for the Manchester City clash, Arteta will need to explore alternative options. Leandro Trossard has often deputised on the left flank, displaying proficiency but lacking Martinelli’s dynamism. Another possibility is Gabriel Jesus, who could pose a threat on the wing against his former club, albeit with potential rustiness following his return from injury.
