Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has lauded current manager Mikel Arteta for successfully eliminating toxicity that had infiltrated the club during the latter stages of Arsene Wenger’s reign and Unai Emery’s tenure.

Under Arteta’s leadership, Arsenal have made significant strides, currently sitting atop the Premier League table and advancing to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Despite fierce competition from Liverpool and Manchester City, the team’s resurgence under the Basque manager has been nothing short of remarkable.

Fabregas shared his insights on the BBC Planet Premier League podcast, highlighting Arteta’s ability to implement his vision and silence opposing voices within the club. The midfielder credited Arteta’s emphasis on standards and discipline for the team’s improvement on the pitch.

“I think it’s quite simple. Arsenal was merged into a big mess. I think there were too many people talking. There was a lot of toxicity I would say within the club. It doesn’t necessarily need to be in the club, but around the club and he [Arteta] just came in.

“He had an idea, he had his methodology, style of play, and he put it all together. He had the bravery, even though he’s a young coach, to put it all together and to say, right, this is the standards, this is what I want to do.

“I think he keeps repeating those words. In press conferences, he talks about intentions, he talks about character, about running, about standards.”

The former Arsenal star also praised Arteta’s focus on promoting young talent, noting a renewed sense of commitment among the players. Fabregas emphasised the importance of fostering a culture of hard work and dedication, which he believes Arteta has successfully implemented.

“This new generation of players has shown a genuine desire to represent the club and contribute to its growth. Arteta has effectively eradicated the toxicity that was detrimental to both players and managers,” Fabregas added.

Having made over 200 appearances for Wenger’s Arsenal, Fabregas remains closely connected to the club’s legacy.
