Arsenal have been dealt a potential blow to their title hopes after news emerged today that one of their star players has been forced to pull out of international duty with an apparent injury.

Gabriel Magalhaes, who has so far played in all but two of the Gunners’ Premier League games this season, was due to represent Brazil in their upcoming friendlies against England and Spain, but will now return to Arsenal after leaving his national side with an injury.

Gabriel has been replaced in the squad by Juventus’ Bremer, who has previously made just three appearances for the Brazilian national team, and has not played for them at all since the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Sami Mokbel has reported that the 26-year-old’s withdrawal is more precautionary than because of a serious injury, and went on to confirm that the defender has been carrying a foot issue of late, which has likely prompted the precaution.

According to James Olley, Gabriel’s injury that has ruled him out of the international break is an inflamed achilles tendon. However it’s not expected to be a long-term problem for the Brazilian.

Gabriel joins a long list of Arsenal stars who will not be playing during the upcoming international break amid injury concerns and precautions, with Thomas Partey, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Martinelli among those also staying in North London.

It is less than two weeks until Mikel Arteta’s side face Manchester City at the Etihad, in what many anticipate could be a title-deciding game, so the club will be desperate to ensure that their best players remain fit throughout the international break.

Fans will be relieved to hear that Gabriel’s withdrawal is only precautionary, given that it was a defensive injury, or two, that derailed their title fight last season, when William Saliba was ruled out for a long period during the run-in.
