An Arsenal star has today narrowly missed out on winning a major individual award, after a phenomenal season so far with the Gunners, as a rival steals top spot.

When Declan Rice joined Arsenal in a £105m move from West Ham last summer, expectations on the midfielder were very high, but he has shown himself to be among the league’s best players with his fine displays this season.

The 25-year-old was considered to be among the front-runners for the Football Writers Association (FWA) Men’s Footballer of the Year award, but has been pipped to first place by a rival star.

Manchester City’s Phil Foden has won the award, after an excellent season where he has scored 24 goals and assisted a further 10 in all competitions, with Rice a strong runner-up in the competition.

Some Arsenal fans have not taken the news well, however, with one saying on X (formerly Twitter): “How the hell is Foden winning the award when Saka literally is having a better season.”

Few can dispute Foden’s quality this season, but many have been left shocked by Bukayo Saka’s total inclusion from the top six of the list, given that he has 19 goals and 14 assists in all competitions this season.

Reflective of Arsenal’s excellent league campaign so far, the Gunners had another representative in the final standings of the award, with captain Martin Ødegaard scooping fourth place – ahead of the likes of Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins.
