The atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium has been improving year on year, and now one Arsenal star given praise to fans for lifting him during his “difficult time” at the club.

Aaron Ramsdale lost his starting place in goal for the Gunners shortly after the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford, and now looks almost certain to leave the club in the summer transfer window.

This has taken a toll on Ramsdale, which was confirmed when his dad remarkably spoke to the ‘Highbury Squad Podcast’ earlier this season, and said: “Aaron lost that smile. And it’s difficult to see him there. We all keep saying: ‘You need to keep smiling’. And at the moment in time, we haven’t got that smile in him.”

But Ramsdale has now spoken out on the situation himself, and has heaped praise on Arsenal fans for rallying behind him during what has been a turbulent time in his career.

The England international said: “This year with the situation I’ve found myself in, they [the Arsenal fans] have been extra special. Even before games when my name is read out, I’ve heard the cheers, and warming up people still want to give me a wave.

“I think that’s kept me going more than I realised this season. Home and away I’ve always felt the love, heard chants, and that’s not something the second goalkeeper will get at many other places.”

The 25-year-old continued: “That’s been a massive boost for me. It could have been easy going through the season thinking you are forgotten about, but it’s been special during a difficult time, with how much love they’ve shown.”

Ramsdale also recognised the support shown to David Raya as well as himself, saying: “Obviously fans have their favourites, but personally I think they’ve shown huge respect to both goalkeepers.

“They’ve supported whoever plays, and I think that shows great unity from the fanbase. They want the team to do well, the team comes first and I can’t thank them enough for what they do. What they do for the team in general is outstanding.”
