According to recent reports, Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu has inked a new deal with Arsenal as he nears his return to the pitch.

Since his arrival from Serie A side Bologna in 2021, the versatile defender has made 73 appearances for the Gunners across various competitions. The Sun has revealed that Tomiyasu’s new contract will see his wages double to approximately £100,000 per week.

While an official announcement is pending until Tomiyasu’s recovery from injury, the 25-year-old is expected to resume action soon after being sidelined due to a calf issue. Following Arsenal’s commanding 6-0 victory over Sheffield United on Monday, Mikel Arteta expressed optimism about Tomiyasu’s imminent return, stating, “He’s very close, he’s already doing something on the grass, and hopefully, we’re going to have him very close with us.”

In addition to Tomiyasu’s contract extension, fellow defender Ben White is reportedly on the brink of agreeing to new terms. The club has also secured contract extensions for key players such as Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, William Saliba, and Aaron Ramsdale in recent months.

This proactive approach to contract renewals is attributed to the efforts of sporting director Edu, with Arsenal aiming to reward players for their performances rather than waiting for agents to initiate discussions, as has been the case previously.

Currently third in the Premier League standings, just two points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, Arsenal have been buoyed by their recent attacking prowess, having scored 31 goals in their last seven league outings. Arteta emphasised the importance of maintaining a winning mentality, acknowledging the high standards set by top clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City over the years.

“We are trying to improve in every phase of play; they are understanding the chemistry of the players and the desire they have to constantly be better, and improve in every area,” Arteta remarked.

While acknowledging the team’s progress, he highlighted the challenges of managing games effectively and adapting to opponents’ strategies. Despite the hurdles, Arteta expressed confidence in his players’ capabilities and their commitment to continual improvement.
