Arsenal have embarked on contract negotiations with midfielder Jorginho as the clock ticks down on his current deal, with the club opting to pursue fresh terms rather than simply extending his existing contract.

The 32-year-old has showcased stellar performances in recent outings, notably shining in Arsenal’s commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Jorginho’s key role within the Arsenal squad, coupled with his wealth of experience, renders him an invaluable asset to the team, particularly during the decisive phase of the season. Expressing a focused mentality earlier this month, Jorginho emphasised the importance of taking each game as it comes in the pursuit of success.

“I think we need to focus, as I always said, game by game,” Jorginho said earlier this month. The Liverpool game is gone now and we need to focus on West Ham and the next one after that and the next one after that. If we want to stay in the race, we need to focus on each game and give everything we can in every single game.”

Primarily deployed in a deep-lying midfield position, Jorginho’s versatility has also seen him excel further forward as a No. 8, earning acclaim from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who lauded his impact on the team’s performance.

“He’s a top player, especially when the opponents have certain behaviours or certain set-up,” said Arteta.

“The way I can imagine the game, he is going to have a big impact, but I think you have to do it at this level and when he’s not playing consistently, credit to him because he was magnificent today, again.”

Having clinched the Euro 2020 title with Italy, Jorginho now eyes the prospect of adding the Premier League trophy to his accolades with Arsenal, as they remain embroiled in a tight title race alongside Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, should Arsenal fail to secure his services, a return to Italy looms as a viable option, with Lazio and Juventus emerging as potential destinations. With strong ties to Lazio’s head coach Maurizio Sarri and Juventus’ sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos remains open to evaluating offers, prioritising Arsenal but acknowledging the allure of Serie A clubs.
