An Arsenal hero of recent years has offered his services back to the club ahead of next season.

According to the Chilean newspaper LaTercera, Alexis Sánchez asked Mikel Arteta if he could return to North London this summer. However Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta rejected the approach as he’s looking at other options to bolster the Gunners attack ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Alexis Sanchez was interested in returning to North London after a successful season in France with Marseille. The former Arsenal star scored 14 goals in 35 Ligue One appearances during the 2022/23 campaign. At 34-years-old Alexis Sanchez doesn’t look like slowing down and still appears to have a lot to offer wherever he ends up next season.

Arsenal fans will remember the Chilean well. Alexis joined the Gunners in 2014, after the World Cup which was held in Brazil. In search for more game time, Sanchez decided to switch leagues and join the Gunners from Barcelona in a deal worth €43million. What a bargain that would turn out to be.

Alexis Sanchez helped Arsenal win back-to-back FA Cups after beating Aston Villa in the final. Sánchez scored one and assisted one in a convincing 4-0 win, which won the Gunners their 12th FA Cup.

In four and a half years he spent in North London, the Chilean played 122 games and scored 60 goals, winning two FA Cups in the process.

However, in December 2017, Sánchez felt that it was time to seek a new challenge, and in January 2018, a swap deal with Manchester United for Henrikh Mkhitaryan was agreed. This swap deal is often seen as the worst swap deal in history, as none of the players fulfilled their expectations.

As reported by multiple sources, after the first training session, Sánchez called his agent and asked him if he could terminate the contract and come back to Arsenal, which of course not possible.

After the infamous episode in United shirt, Sánchez went to Inter Milan initially on loan, and last summer he got a transfer to Olympique de Marseille, where the Chilean seemed to find his form again. However, it looks like he won’t be staying in Marseille ahead of next season with Arsenal at the top of his wish list of clubs to join, but unfortunately Mikel Arteta won’t let his dream of a return to the Emirates come true.
