Arsenal have been handed a big boost ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão in Portugal.

This follows the announcement that one of the opposition’s key players will miss the game with an injury that will sideline him for six months.

Zaidu Sanusi returned from international duty with the Super Eagles of Nigeria during the week to start FC Porto’s Portuguese Primera Liga clash against Estrella da Amadora on Saturday.

After 37 minutes, the left-back sustained an injury and was stretchered off, with further examination showing he sustained a serious injury that will be a huge blow for the Portuguese side as they prepare to face Arsenal midweek.

“The Nigerian international has a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and the external lateral ligament of his left knee,” reads a statement on the club’s official website confirming the nature of the injury sustained by the defender.

FC Porto manager Sérgio Conceição commented on the setback: “It’s the bad news of the evening, Zaidu’s injury. I think it’s serious. It comes after a clear, obvious foul, in front of the area. That move leads to Zaidu’s injury. We’re having some bad luck with the refereeing teams.

“There are situations that… no words. It happened, we are all sad for Zaidu, I think the season is over for him, and we were shaken by the situation, knowing that it could have been avoided. It was a clear foul that led to some danger, and we will be a player short for the rest of the season.”

Meanwhile, the Gunners have not reported any injury cases from the weekend’s 0-5 win over Burnley at Turf Moor. Instead, as earlier reported by now.arsenal, Mikel Arteta will welcome back Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira, who has resumed training and is ready to play again following a long-term injury that required surgery in November 2023.

With the opposition unsettled by the injury to their first-choice left-back and Arsenal arriving for the game in excellent form, fans will be hoping for a positive result on Wednesday night.
