Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations took a hit on Tuesday night as Manchester City surged to the top of the table with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. With Erling Haaland netting twice for the reigning champions, Arsenal’s chances now rely on a West Ham win at the Etihad Stadium coupled with their own victory against Everton.

While Arsenal’s hopes dimmed, the result secured Champions League football for Aston Villa next season. Spurs, aiming for a top-four finish, now face Europa League football next term.

Following City’s triumph at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, jubilant scenes erupted at Villa Park during the club’s end-of-season awards ceremony. Among the celebrants, however, one figure stood out for a less exuberant demeanour: striker Ollie Watkins.

Ollie Watkins, instrumental in Villa’s top-four push with 19 Premier League goals and 13 assists, was captured looking pensive after City’s win. The English international, who previously confessed his Arsenal fandom, found himself on the opposing side earlier this season, scoring against his childhood club.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Watkins acknowledged his Arsenal roots, stating, “I used to [support Arsenal]. I grew up supporting Arsenal but it’s a different story now playing against them. Not too much to say really.”

In 2020, Watkins revealed his long-held aspiration to don the Arsenal jersey. “That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day,” he confessed. “But, you know, it’s a long shot.”

With ongoing speculation linking Watkins to Arsenal over the past 18 months, the Gunners’ need for a striker in the upcoming transfer window has fueled further speculation. However, Watkins’ recent contract extension at Villa Park in October suggests any move in the near future is improbable.
