Arsenal fans have expressed displeasure over the appointment of a controversial referee for the crucial Premier League clash against Manchester United.

While the prospect of facing an out-of-form Manchester United side might seem appealing, Arsenal’s historical record at Old Trafford is not particularly encouraging.

Adding to this, the announcement of Paul Tierney officiating the match has sparked frustration among Arsenal supporters.

Tierney’s performance as a referee in the same fixture last season, which resulted in Arsenal losing 3-1, was marred by controversy, particularly surrounding a disallowed goal by Gabriel Martinelli.

As Gabriel Martinelli had a goal wrongly disallowed, after which an apology was later issued because of the referee and VAR team claiming that Martin Odegaard had fouled Christian Eriksen in the build-up.

Fans have now expressed disappointment and anger, citing Tierney’s past errors and questioning the decision to have him officiate such a crucial match. Some have highlighted the poor selection of referees, which saw Mikel Arteta land himself in controversy earlier this season after criticizing them.

“Aside from Paul Tierney being from Greater Manchester (given it’s hard to find a ref that isn’t) how does he get the same game this season after a mistake the PGMOL had to apologise for last time around?” One fan pointed out.

“The guy who made a monumental error that cost us the game last season gets rewarded by refereeing the same fixture a year later,” another fan stated.

“I’ll never forgive him for that disallowed Martinelli goal at Old Trafford last season,” another added.

“This is a joke not only because he is from Manchester but both him and VAR got a huge decision wrong at our game last season that cost us,” a fan posted.

“Ah brilliant, the only man in football who thought Ødegaard fouled Eriksen last season to wipe off our opening goal,” a fan fumed.

Aside from the frustration with Tierney’s appointment, Mikel Arteta will prepare his charges to put in a stellar performance and get maximum points in the title race. However, if there is any refereeing controversy during the match, many Arsenal fans are likely to attribute it to Tierney’s selection as the match official
