Arsenal defender Omar Rekik could miss the remainder of the season due to an administrative blunder by Swiss side Servette.

The 22-year-old, who joined Servette on loan in January, was left off the club’s league registration list, a mistake that could have significant consequences for his playing time.

Rekik’s loan move to Servette was seen as an opportunity for the Tunisian international to revive his season after a challenging stint with Wigan Athletic in the first half of the campaign. Injuries limited Rekik to just 14 appearances during his loan spell with Wigan in League One. Hoping for a fresh start in Switzerland, Rekik now finds himself facing further frustrations due to an administrative oversight.

Swiss outlet 20 Minutes reported that Servette failed to register Rekik, along with two other January signings, for league matches. David Barras, a spokesperson for the Swiss Super League, confirmed the omission, stating, “Servette did not send us anything at all.” In response, Servette issued a brief statement acknowledging the administrative error and expressed their commitment to resolving the issue.

While Rekik is registered for Conference League fixtures, he was notably absent from Servette’s squads for the round of 32 clashes against Ludogorets. As a result, the Arsenal center-back, capable of playing on the left and right-hand side of defense, faces the prospect of several months on the sidelines. Furthermore, he is unable to feature for Arsenal in case the Gunners decide to recall him.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta excluded Rekik from the Premier League and Champions League squads, considering his lack of first-team appearances. The versatile defender, signed from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2021 for £600,000, had previously been loaned to Sparta Rotterdam and Wigan. His move to Servette was met with optimism from club president Thierry Regenass, who praised Rekik’s potential to excel in the Servetti environment.

Rekik, who joined Arsenal with the aspiration of being part of a club renowned for providing opportunities to young talents, now faces an uncertain period as the administrative mishap threatens to sideline him for a significant part of the season.
