Arsenal have officially announced their new home kit for the 2024/25 season after weeks of speculations and leaked images.

In a nod to their storied history, Arsenal revealed that the iconic cannon symbol will replace the traditional club crest on their new home shirt. This marks the first time in 35 years that the cannon will feature on the home kit, having last appeared during the 1989-90 season.

The cannon has previously adorned various Arsenal shirts, including this season’s away kit and last season’s black away shirt, both of which were well-received by fans. This change extends to all three of Arsenal’s kits for the next season, with the away and third kits also set to feature the cannon symbol.

Adidas, the kit manufacturer, stated that this alteration is intended to celebrate the Gunners’ rich heritage. “We anchored this season in the iconography of Arsenal – and there is no more iconic symbol for Arsenal than the cannon,” said Sam Handy, SVP of Product and Design at Adidas.

“In development, we revisited the archive and reviewed years of design and collaboration, the core elements of the club’s identity to players and supporters. So, this season is all about the cannon, the role it plays in the legacy of the club, and reintroducing it to a fresh generation of supporters and players.”

Despite this temporary change, the club crest remains a significant part of Arsenal’s identity and will continue to feature prominently, including on the artwork around the Emirates Stadium.

The new home kit, unveiled on Thursday morning, will debut on the pitch when Arsenal Women face Brighton in the final match of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season on Saturday.

Arsenal follow in the footsteps of other clubs who have used alternative symbols on their kits. For instance, Manchester United’s away shirt this season features a Red Devil symbol, while Liverpool’s shirts prominently display the liver bird.

The current Arsenal crest, in use since 2002, will take a back seat to the cannon for one season. This return to the cannon is expected to resonate strongly with fans, much like the emblem’s previous appearances on popular kit designs.
