The Arsenal fans reacted in a surprising way following David Raya’s poor performance against Chelsea yesterday. No Arsenal player played particularly well, but David Raya’s performance stood out for all the wrong reasons as the Gunners dropped points at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea took the lead from the penalty spot after William Saliba was deemed to have stopped a goal with his hand following a header from Mykhaylo Mudryk. Everyone expected Arsenal to come out for the second-half a different team, but it didn’t happen and it went from bad to worse when David Raya found himself in no-man’s land as he was lobbed by Mudryk to double Chelsea’s lead.

Arsenal only turned up with 15 minutes to go, as an amazing strike from Declan Rice, followed by a first-time finish by Leandro Trossard at the back post kept the Gunners’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season alive.

With Aaron Ramsdale not in the squad due to the birth of his first child, David Raya started his fifth Premier League game in a row under Mikel Arteta but it was not the best of afternoons for the Spaniard. The Arsenal keeper was at fault for Chelsea’s second goal and then nearly gifted another to Cole Palmer as he played presented the Chelsea man the ball under no pressure.

Raya was able to salvage the error but having already been 2-0 at this point, the Arsenal fans weren’t in the mood to forgive. The Arsenal fans inside the stadium responded by singing Aaron Ramsdale’s name as they made their feelings clear following a number of errors by David Raya yesterday.

Aaron Ramsdale has only started one game out of the last seven for Arsenal, coming in the Carabao Cup against Brentford where he kept a clean sheet. However you can’t help but feel his chance is coming following David Raya’s performance at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel Arteta on the fans singing Aaron Ramsdale’s name: “Great, I love him, I will sing as well for him, every single day we’ve sung a lot for him, yesterday because he was a father, the most beautiful thing to do and he’s someone who has this charisma and personality and is very loved around the team.”
