Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard has said ahead of the game against Brighton on Sunday that he wants to score more goals after hitting his 15th league goal of the season last time out against Newcastle United.

The Norwegian has been one of Arsenal’s most improved and consistent performers this season. If you compare his stats from 2021/22 to his current campaign, he has doubled his goals & assists tally with three games left to play.

The 24-year-old scored seven goals and recorded four assists in the Premier League in 2021/22. In 2022/23 he’s doubled them numbers with 15 goals and eight assists with three games still to go.

The Arsenal captain might be the clubs joint-highest goal scorer this season, alongside Gabriel Martinelli, however speaking ahead of the game against Brighton this weekend, that isn’t enough for the Norwegian. He wants more.

Martin Odegaard: “I was pleased to get some more goals in the last couple of games. Granit Xhaka did so well in the Chelsea game, and he gave me two great passes for my goals.”

“As soon as I see Granit attack the space on his left side I always know he going to put the ball in. Then it’s just about me being in the right areas and trying to hit the target.”

“I was delighted with my goal at Newcastle too. It was my 15th goal of the season, and I’m pleased with that, but of course I want to score more. I never set myself targets at the start of the season, I just want to focus on what I can do, and that’s being in the right areas at the right time. I want to have the right mindset to be dangerous in the box.”

After scoring his 15th goal of the season at Newcastle last Sunday, Martin Odegaard is now one goal away from being the outright highest Premier League goal scoring midfielder in a single season, excluding penalties.

Martin Odegaard also mentioned how he’s been working on his finishing in training, so it’s no surprise the Arsenal captain has improved in front of goal dramatically this season.

“It’s true l’ve been practising my finishing for a long time, so it’s good to see the work l’m putting in paying off in the matches. I think scoring goals should be part of my game anyway.

“Everyone wants to score goals but, as l’ve said many times, the main thing is to help the team. If that’s by scoring goals, then that’s great, but to assist and create chances is also good for the team.”

The Norwegian joined Arsenal from Real Madrid at the beginning of last season for a fee of £35million. Considering how well Odegaard has done and the fact the Gunners sold Joe Willock that same window for £30million, it’s worked out to be an outstanding bit of business from Mikel Arteta and Edu.

Martin Odegaard is Mikel Arteta’s main man and with a return to the Champions League on the cards next season, he’s only going to become even more important in an Arsenal shirt.
